“One of my guiding scriptures is Psalm 46. It says, ‘Be still and know that I am God,’ of course, but it also says that ‘God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved.’ I am fully convinced that the mission of the church requires full engagement with the world in which we live.”
As Interim Associate Pastor of Faith in Action, Matthew Johnson provides spiritual and organizational leadership for Westminster’s ministries of social justice and service, paying special attention to the church’s call to be a telling presence in a large, diverse downtown environment.
He earned his Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary and his bachelor degree in music from St. Olaf College. While in seminary, he served as intern pastor at Trinity Lutheran Congregation and Augsburg College, where he engaged in numerous social justice projects.
His interest in peace and justice grew when he co-led a small group of young adults on a trip to Israel and Palestine in 2010. He and Tim Hart-Andersen now co-chair Windows into Palestine.
A former member of the Minnesota Opera chorus and Minnesota Chorale, he looks forward to being part of the music at Westminster, especially the new Justice Choir.
Matt is married to Regina, a teacher at Hopkins West Junior High.
